In 1989, while living in Hilton Head Island, S.C. I saw Dr. Lois Lee on the Sally Jesse Raphael show and was struck by her passionate appeal to help the street kids and runaways she was working with in Hollywood, California. Dr. Lee's dream was to start a shelter to help teens get out of prostitution. She talked about the problems of runaways in Hollywood, how these children were taken advantage of by pimps, drug dealers and others and how important it was to help. Her plea was so compelling, I made a mental note to contact her if I ever had a chance to help in some way.
In 1990, we moved to California. Kelly and I were talking about ways of using our music to help teens and I remembered Lois Lee. At that time, Children of the Night was in Hollywood. I contacted Dr. Lee and asked if we could come to the shelter, talk about our relationship and sing some of our songs. Lois thought the kids would like the idea and especially the Southern accents so she agreed and the rest is history!
We have been going to Children of the Night which is now located in Van Nuys, California, ever since that first visit in 1990. Members of our band joined us soon after and readily agreed to participate in building and continuing the Special Angel Project.
Our work with Dr. Lois Lee and her staff at Children of the Night is the ongoing inspiration for continuing our mission. It is our fervent wish to help shine a bright light on the work done at this very unique "home" for teens with problems few people will tackle or can even attempt to solve. Dr. Lee is a true beacon of light for these young people who now have hope and a real future because of her belief in them, her ability to fight for them and to guide them through many difficult processes. Fact ~ Over 1 million kids run away from home every year
and those numbers are increasing.
Child prostitution is an immense and devastating problem that nobody wants to recognize, nobody wants to talk about, and everyone wants to cover up. Child prostitution is international in scope. Pimps have become more sophisticated in recruiting and harboring the children they force to prostitute, moving their victims from state to state, often forcing them to work as prostitutes outside the larger cities and in small towns where police are unfamiliar with the operations of child prostitution rings.
